Gold price per gram: how to calculate it from the troy ounce (XAU/USD)

To calculate the gold price per gram, divide the troy ounce price (XAU/USD) by 31.1035, the number of grams in a troy ounce. Using the AIMPATFX system quote of October 10, 2026 (record of 18:07 UTC, market closed, latest quote available), gold is at 4,194.35 USD per ounce, which equals about 134.85 USD per gram of pure gold (24k). It is an example reference, not a live price and not what you will pay at a jeweler.

The formula step by step

  1. Take the troy ounce price in dollars (XAU/USD).
  2. Divide it by 31.1035 to get the price per gram of pure gold.
  3. Multiply by the karat purity (karats ÷ 24).
  4. If you need another currency, multiply by the exchange rate from a trusted, dated source.

Why jewelry prices do not match

The calculation above gives the value of the metal at the spot price. What you pay or receive at a jeweler or a gold buyer usually includes the dealer's margin, labor, local taxes and, when selling, a discount to spot. These differences depend on the country and the shop; no generic figures are published because there is no single source. Always ask for the price per gram and the karat in writing.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in an ounce of gold?

A troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams. Do not confuse it with the avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g) used for other goods.

Is the 18k gold price per gram 75% of the 24k price?

Pure gold content is 75%, so the metal value is proportional. The retail price can differ because of margin and labor.

Can I use this calculation to trade gold CFDs?

Not directly: in CFDs the reference is the ounce. Before trading, review your risk management.

Where do I see the price in my local currency?

Multiply the USD price per gram by the exchange rate you use, stating which one it is and its date. This guide does not publish a local quote because there is no verified evidence in this update.
